OLYMPIC AND ROVERS TO MEET IN TOP OF THE TABLE SHOWCASE

A top-of-the-table clash at Wakefield Park headlines this week’s action in the Ultra Football Central League.

Four teams have set the early pace on six points after two games, with two of them, Wellington Olympic and Napier City Rovers, set to meet on Saturday afternoon.

Napier have netted 11 goals in their first two games against early-season strugglers Waterside Karori and Miramar Rangers, while Olympic have done things the hard way with one-goal wins over Wairarapa United and Karori.

There will be another blockbuster Saturday clash at Hutt Park when Stop Out meet Wairarapa.

The Hutt Valley team are another on six points, conceding just once in their first two games. Wairarapa drew with Western Suburbs last week after their first-up loss to Olympic.

Saturday was also meant to see league-leaders Wellington United play Lower Hutt City, but this has been postponed withWellington United coach, Paul Temple, away on A-League duties with the Wellington Phoenix and Lower Hutt City’s coach, Steve Coleman, also away with the New Zealand Secondary Schools team travelling the USA. It is great to see the opportunities being given to our local coaches.

Sunday’s action sees early battlers Havelock North Wanderers and Miramar Rangers take each other on in Hawke's Bay, while defending champions Western Suburbs host winless Karori.

In the Capital Premier division, the most intriguing matchup will be between leaders Lower Hutt (reserves) and Petone. With the postponement of the first-team game, Lower Hutt have the luxury of being able to drop a couple of players down should they choose to. That may make it harder still for Petone to register their first win of the season.

The mid-table jam might continue after the games this weekend, with Tawa hosting Miramar Rangers and Island Bay United taking on Upper Hutt City. The other matches see Olympic’s reserves play North Wellington and Wests’ reserves travel up the coast to play Kapiti Coast United.

In the W-League, Wairarapa can prove their first-up win was no fluke when travelling over the Rimutakas to play defending champions Upper Hutt City, who lost to Wellington United in week one.

United take on Seatoun as they look to continue to show their early-season strength, while fellow week-one winners Palmerston North Marist host newcomers Wests.

After making a statement over Stop Out in week one of the Women's Premier competition, Wellington United's Sapphires take on Island Bay's Flames in round 2. Having been beaten to nil by Brooklyn Northern United last week, the battle of the nicknames could see the Flames doused.

Wakefield Park hosts a Sunday afternoon double-header with Karori looking to back up last week's win against Stop Out and BNU hosting Kapiti Coast United. The other game sees Vic Uni travel out to Petone.
