Capital Football | Plucky Petone make Central League stir

Petone have thrown a huge spanner in the Ultra Football Central League works by holding league leaders Miramar Rangers to a 1-1 draw.

That was only the second time Miramar have dropped points this season, and saw Western Suburbs close back to within one point of the lead, while Wellington Olympic sit a further three points back from them.

It all started so well for Rangers when Jake Williams capped a delightful attacking move to score in the eighth minute.

But Petone hit back nine minutes later via Jaga Scott-Greenfield, before holding on for a vital point which kept them out of the relegation zone on goal difference.

Sitting bottom now are Wairarapa United following their 3-1 home loss to Stop Out.

Wairarapa took the lead via a lovely finish from the evergreen Paul Ifill, but goals to Ta Eh Doe, Ryan Kelly and Lewis Jackson saw the visitors take the spoils.

Wests clawed back two points on Miramar when they proved too hot to handle for North Wellington, beating them 4-1 at Alex Moore Park.

Olympic also gained ground on the leader with their 2-0 away win over Napier City Rovers, while Lower Hutt City moved into fifth with a 5-1 win over Waterside Karori.

It was business as usual in the Ultra Football W-League as leaders Wellington United and Palmerston North Marist both had big wins again, each scoring six goals.
