Wellington United have won the Ultra Football W-League for a third year in a row in a thrilling conclusion to the season.
They took out the title on goal difference, beating Palmerston North Marist by three goals after both sides won 8-0 on Saturday.
Wellington United sprinted out of the gates in their search for goals against Western Suburbs at Ole Academy, scoring five in the first 30 minutes to ease their nerves, including one to Jemma Robertson, who claimed the Golden Boot with 26 goals in 14 matches, one ahead of PNM’s Mikaela Boxall.
Boxall scored a hat-trick in her side’s win over North Wellington. Their flood of goals came late on as they scored five in the final 14 minutes in an attempt to make things interesting, but they eventually fell short.
The other matches in the round saw Waterside Karori beat Seatoun 6-0 to finish third, while Wairarapa United beat Petone 2-1 to finish fourth.
The Ultra Football Central League has a new leader, with Western Suburbs moving two points clear of Miramar Rangers after the latter suffered a shock loss to relegation-threatened Wairarapa United.
Wairarapa’s Cory Chettleburgh scored the only goal of the match with a tap-in in the third minute before his side clung on for a vital three points which pushed them past Stop Out and out of the relegation zone.
Western Suburbs managed a 1-0 win over Stop Out thanks to Ryan Feutz’s 61st-minute goal.
Wellington Olympic kept their outside title chance alive with a 2-0 win over Lower Hutt City. Ben Mata and Jack-Henry Sinclair’s goals have them six points back from Wests.
Petone also pulled themselves off the bottom of the ladder, beating Waterside Karori 2-0 after goals from Alex Shepherd-Reynolds and Luke Grindlay.
North Wellington pulled further away from the bottom, all the way into fourth, after their 3-1 win over Napier City Rovers. Jesse Randall moved top of the Golden Boot standings after his brace in the match.
Around the grounds, the Masters 1 champion was crowned and a streak was ended when Western Suburbs Wanderers beat Waterside Karori Dreamers 2-1.
It saw the Wanderers take the title and ended the Dreamers’ unbeaten run at 66.
In the men’s Capital Premier, both Upper Hutt City and Wainuiomata lost in the pursuit of a spot in the Central League playoff, meaning Wainui maintained their one point lead.
