Wellington United, Champions of the Kate Sheppard Cup, 2021

With the longest and most complicated cup run in the history of the Kate Sheppard Cup, Wellington United has overcome all to finally lift the cup high. The Kate Sheppard Cup final was originally scheduled for September the 12th, 2021, but both Covid 19 lockdowns and then isolations have resulted in many postponements for the final to take place on Sunday 27th of March.

Overcoming Auckland women’s powerhouse Eastern Suburbs in the semi final 1-0, Wellington United took the lead over Hamilton Wanders in the final thanks to a Sarah Alder header in the 55th minute. They continued to defend well to secure a 1-0 win. Midfielder Emma Main won the Maia Jackman Trophy for the MVP with a dazzling performance.

This win was the first time a club from the Capital Football Federation has won the Kate Sheppard Cup, they join men’s teams from Miramar Rangers, Waterside Karori, Petone, Western Suburbs, Wellington Olympic, Marist, Seatoun, Stop Out and Wairarapa United in winning the national cup final.

Capital Football congratulates the Wellington United players, coaching staff, and the committee. This Kate Sheppard Cup win has come off the back of many years of investment in their girls youth pathway as well as their senior women’s team, The Diamonds. You can see them in action in the Kelly Cup next weekend as they officially kick off their 2022 season.

Club Captain Sandy Cumpstone is delighted with Wellington United’s Kate Sheppard Cup success:

“I am incredibly proud of the Diamonds family and our wider family as well. From the players that have helped to pave the way, to the players that will follow in their footsteps, to our friends and families, to our club members and supporters, to our committee, to our funders and sponsors; everyone has played their part in helping our Diamonds to create history over the weekend for both Wellington United and for our region as a whole.

I am so happy for the players and the coaches, Maika, Elliot, and Guille; they all deserve every success and accolade that comes their way! We will be sharing memories of this fantastic, exceptionally long, season for years to come that is for sure. We look forward to continuing to grow and strengthen our Diamonds family.“
