All eyes on Olympic in the Men's NZ National League Championship Grand Final

After lifting the Central League trophy back in September, Wellington Olympic are now just one win away from gaining the title of National League Champions.

This Sunday 4th December, Wellington Olympic take on a treble-winning Auckland City (Chatham Cup, Northern League, OFC Champions League) in the Grand Final of the NZ National League Championship being played at Mt Smart Stadium.

This will be the 3rd time the two teams have met this season, the first time being back in August when Auckland City hosted the Capital side in the semi-final of the Chatham Cup. City won on the day 3-1 and went on to win the cup for the first time in their club history. A little over a month later, Olympic hosted Auckland City in the 1st round of the NZ National League competition. Auckland City won that game after forcing an own goal in the 86th minute to win 2-1.

Olympic went on to go undefeated in their remaining National League games to finish level on points at the top of the table with Auckland City.

After 9 games, Wellington Olympic lead the way with the number of goals scored, putting 30 into the back of the net during the round-robin phase. Striker, Gianni Bouzouki leads the golden boot race with 9 to his name, and his teammates Jesse Randall (7 goals) and Jack Henry-Sinclair (5 goals) join him in the top 8 of the standings. Olympic’s attacking threat is expected to cause problems for Auckland City in the final third. The good work in the final third is just as good in the defensive third too, Olympic have the best defensive record in the league conceding only 8 goals in 9 games against the best in teams in the country.

Olympic will have sour memories of last season’s South Central Series Grand Final after being handed a massive 7-2 defeat and the hands of Miramar Rangers. Wellington Olmypic can’t erase it from their history, but they have the chance this Sunday to respond and rectify their woes from 2021.
