Nora Watkins Memorial Shield introduced into Women's Central League


Capital Football is thrilled to announce the introduction of the Nora Watkins Memorial Shield into the women’s Central League, the introduction of this Shield is a testament to the growing prominence of women's football in our region. This Memorial Shield symbolises the pinnacle of achievement in women's football, echoing the legacy of its namesake, Nora Watkins (nee Hetherington).

Nora Watkins, a pioneer in New Zealand football, left a significant mark on the sport. From her remarkable tenure as a Football Ferns player to her groundbreaking role as the team's first female coach, her contributions have shaped the landscape of women's football. As a player and coach, she exemplified dedication, skill, and leadership. Over the years Nora represented the Wellington region with seven national titles and seven goals to her name. Nora played and coached at several local football clubs including Petone FC, Upper Hutt FC and Miramar Rangers FC. Her involvement in the women’s game has been immense and after her passing in 2023, Capital Football and her family are delighted to introduce this Memorial Shield.

This initiative inspired by the continued growth of women’s football, adds to the ever-growing legacy of the 2023 Women's World Cup.  The Nora Watkins Memorial Shield stands as an opportunity to honour a trailblazer in women’s football and provides a platform for female athletes to showcase their talents and inspire future generations.

Waterside Karori will be the inaugural holders of the shield after being crowned champions of the 2023 Central League. The first challenge match is scheduled for 12:00pm on 18 May against Victoria University at Karori Park. Every subsequent home game for the shield holders will be a challenge match and carry the weight of this historic legacy, adding an extra layer of excitement to each match.

Capital Football thanks all those who contributed to this initiative including Miramar Rangers FC for donating the shield in Nora’s name and to Nora Watkins's family for endorsing this initiative.   • Played in the first 10 games for the Football Ferns from 1975 to 1980 scoring 2 goals.
  • Football Ferns Assistant Coach from 1989 to 1994.
  • The first female to coach the Football Ferns in 1995, 2 games.
  • Played for Wellington from 1974 to 1983, 52 games 7 goals.
  • Competed in 8 National Tournaments, winning 7 of them.
  • Coached Wellington from 1986 to 1996, except having 1991 and 1993 off due to being unavailable.
  • Played club football for Upper Hutt and Miramar Rangers.
  • Coached club football at Miramar Rangers and Petone.
  • Passed away on the 21 June 2023 in Melbourne.
