Capital Football Awards | Celebrating a special 2020 season

Excellence across the Capital Football region was celebrated at the federation’s annual awards dinner on Wednesday night at the Petone Working Men’s Club.

It was a big night for Wainuiomata, whose Capital Premier winning team scooped Team of the Year, while head coach Rupert Kemeys took out Coach of the Year. Capital Premier Golden Boot Kailan Gould also took out Player of the Year for that competition.

It was also a special evening for Wellington United’s Charlotte Wilford Carroll, who won W-League Player of the Year, Women’s Young Player of the Year and Goal of the Year for her superb strike against North Wellington at Alex Moore Park this season.

Andy Bevin won Central League Player of the Year for his role in propelling Miramar Rangers to the Central League title, while his team-mate, Ollie Whyte, won Men’s Young Player of the Year.

The night wasn’t just about celebrating those at the top end of the game, with awards handed out throughout the football community.

Western Suburbs’ Danny Fearon won Personality of the Year for the second year in a row, while there were awards for Wellington United’s Shannon Watson, Paekakariki’s Brendon Cross and Wairarapa United’s Chantelle Leban as Player of the Year in their respective lower league categories.

The Club Service awards recognised the efforts of the unsung heros of the game and were awarded to Paul Muollo (Island Bay United), Jim Christie-Yiavasis (Olympic), Mike Yates (Lower Hutt City), Kevin Wilson (Wairarapa United), Dean Eager (Western Suburbs), Rene Henke (Wellington United).

MC Jason Pine hosted a Q & A with three special guests. First up was Huda Anas, the young North Wellington player who is trailblazer for Muslim women in football in the region. The final two speakers were Wellington Phoenix legend Paul Ifill and Football Fern Anna Green, who gave insights into their professional football careers.

Several award recipients noted the challenges of the Covid-19 season and many times thanks were given to all volunteers, players, coaches, supporters for their efforts in making it a season to remember.
